Vice President's Message - Transitions

Rita_Van_Wyk-Due

Hello my quilting friends.  Usually this message is written by our President, Cheryl Tassinari, as her last address to all of us before turning the gavel over to me.  Sadly, Cheryl is facing a very challenging time in her life as she does her best to cope with her husband being in Hospice care.  I know you all join me in giving her our support.

Fall is the time of year when I’m acutely aware of transitions.  In our homes, light weight quilts are being replaced by heavier ones; likewise our clothing gradually becomes cozier.  A new school year begins. The landscape changes; birds are migrating; the October sky is an incredibly deep shade of blue.  A Guild President steps down, and a new one (a rookie) takes her place.
I’m both excited and nervous about taking the reins and leading this awesome group. I have no special skills to perform this task  –  just willingness to serve our Guild.
The VP position for the coming year has been filled (in a most delightful way!), but I’m sad to say, if no-one is willing to take on the responsibility of serving on the Show committee, there will be NO Guild Show in 2016!  Come on quilters; all it takes is willingness!
Let’s piece together a great 2014-2015 quilting season.
                                          Your VP,  Rita VanWyk-Due

YQG Trivia

June 1997: We had a “hands on“ meeting.  Member Patsy Hartnett showed us how to draft a Feather Design.

We were given a supply list to bring that evening.  I remember that it was fun and I think I still have those practice papers.

However, I am still not comfortable doing feathers on a real quilt.

Seeking one kind-hearted quilter to make two lap-size quilts for two girls who lost their father to cancer last year. The girls have selected a number of their dad’s shirts and shorts and would like to see squares from these items be made into small quilts. I am willing to pay someone to take on this task. Ideally, it would be great to have the quilts done by Christmas, but I can wait if that time frame does not work for the quilter. Please contact Susan Spivey at 717 448 7023. Feel free to leave a message with a number where I can reach you. You can also contact me at susanpspivey@gmail.com. Thank you!

In the past, we have been recycling cards at Mission Central.  We now have an abundance of Christmas cards.  We will still accept all other kinds of cards.  Thanks again for all your generous contributions!

Quilt Show

Desperately Seeking Show Committee for Celebration of Quilts 2016!!help

We need an small energetic group to organize our next fantastic quilt show. Time is of the essence!  The Expo will need to be booked, and a raffle quilt planned. Please talk to your quilting BFFs about making the Celebration of Quilts 2016 our best show ever! With a small dedicated group at the helm, you can make this happen. A binder with previous show information, time line, resources, and key steps will be available. Please call Rita Van Wyk  at 854-0713.
If no one comes forward by October 31, the show will have to be canceled and that would be a very sad thing to happen.

Retreat 2014

Autumn Retreat

Once again it is time for the Fall Retreat for our guild.  Once again we are going on retreat the weekend before Thanksgiving. It seems to work for many giving us a time to finish up some of those gifts we are making or to just take a time out for ourselves before all the holiday stress.

What: Autumn Retreat
Dates: November 14,15,16

Price: $177 for a single / $155 for a double and $140 for a triple.

When you sign up give me the name of your roommate too.

Where: Bongiorno Conference Center 430 Union Hall Road, Carlisle PA 17013

The Retreat is 2 nights and 3 days of quilting. We are on our own for meals on Friday but have 3 meals on Saturday and 2 on Sunday. Check in time for the work room is 9:30 Friday and we have until 5:00 on Sunday to work. The Conference center is Smoke free and no alcohol. We have a microwave, Refrigerator and coffeepot.

Bring your favorite snacks to share, special coffee or tea bags, a mug, anything you love to make you comfortable, pillow, light, computer, and headphones if you enjoy music, sweater, etc. The dinning hall is a short distance from the workroom so you will need to walk a bit or drive your car over. Coats and gloves come in handy some years.
