June 2017

President's Letter

Dear Members,
As I write this it is Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of the summer.  Somehow Mother Nature is ignoring that fact.  May was cool and rainy.  Hopefully when you see this message we will be enjoying summer warmth and sunshine.
I am recovering from my surgery in April and have resumed many of my daily activities including my walking program.  I am also getting back to my quilting and working on UFOs from Quilt Retreat and previous projects.
I will be on vacation the week of our Guild meeting.  VP Peg Gregory will be stepping up to the podium for me.  I’ll be sorry to miss the yard sale fundraiser, but I will visit a quilt shop in the town where we vacation.
Wishing all of you a great summer and success at the June Fundraiser.
Nancy Spiese

Board meeting

Board meeting on Monday July 17, 2017 at 6:30 PM at JoAnn’s Fabrics on Queen St. York, PA.

May Minutes

The May meeting of the York Quilt Guild was held on May 18, 2017. The meeting was called to order at 7pm President, Nancy Spiese. We took a few moments to remember Wendy Buchart, a long time member who passed away.

Deb Wilhide reported we had one visitor and one new member, Peggy Kuster.

Evelyn Hunt reminded us that it costs only $10 to purchase a table for the Guild fundraiser in June.

If you are interested in the bus trip to the Mancuso Quilt Show in Oaks, PA in September, it would be a good idea to sign up as soon as possible. After tonight’s meeting it will be open to outsiders.

We need volunteers for selling tickets for our raffle quilt at the Hershey Show. We will sell Thursday and Sunday, only. 4,000 raffle tickets will be ordered for our quilt.

We need committee members for the 2020 raffle quilt for our show in that year. Speak to Evelyn, if interested.

Evelyn also spoke about several ideas for Community Service Projects.

There is a sign up sheet on the back table for items you’ll provide for our August picnic.

The Raffle Basket was won by Peggy Kohler.

Show and Tell followed the business meeting.

Patty Prodonovich presented the program, “Continued Journey in Quilting…or One Thing Leads to Another.”

The meeting adjourned at 8:45pm.

Respectfully Submitted,
Linda Kenee

Candy Shively's Quilt

Are you traveling to New England this summer? See a thought-provoking exhibit of Art Quilts at the New England Quilt Museum in Lowell, MA (outside Boston), including one from one of our members, Candy Shively. The Threads of Resistance exhibit will be at  New England Quilt Museum, 18 Shattuck Street, Lowell, MA 01852 from July 15 through September 9 with an Opening reception on July 15, 2017 at 11 a.m.  Read more about this somewhat controversial traveling show at http://threadsofresistance.org/. No matter what your political leanings, the quilts are exquisite. As the organizers of this show state:
Art is about communication, and the makers of these works are eager to share their viewpoints. Agree? Disagree? We invite you to join us as we examine these issues and consider differing opinions with civilized, constructive conversation. We hope to ultimately gain a better understanding of one another’s perspectives and to foster continued change in a positive direction.
If you are not passing through Massachusetts, you can see this traveling exhibit throughout 2017 and 2018 at multiple venues around the U.S., including PNQE (The Oaks) in fall, 2018. See the full schedule at http://threadsofresistance.org/schedule.html.
