August 2017

President's Letter

Dear Members
Last month’s program “Hobo Quilts” by Debra Henninger was enjoyable and informative.  She not only had quilt knowledge, she also had historical knowledge about a time period we may have only heard about from parents and grandparents.  Most of us  probably knew very little about the hobo culture and their symbols.
So now we are in August and while we are trying to get in as many summer activities as possible we may be preparing for the start of school.  With fall just around the corner we will be  kicking into high gear for our 2018 Show.  Darla has openings for volunteers to help with the show.  Please consider helping with the show.  If the Show is not where your volunteer leanings are , please think seriously about joining the Board.  Our incoming President needs a Vice President.  We need an ‘understudy’ for Darla Landis for the Quilt Show, and a first year Program chair.  The Guild can not continue without members willing to take up some leadership roles.
This month is our Guild picnic.  Last month’s newsletter includes information about the picnic and suggestions for food items to bring.  I hope you have a great picnic and I will see you in September.

July minutes

The meeting of the York Quilt Guild was called to order on July 13, 2017 at 7p.m. by President, Nancy Spiese. We opened our meeting with our speaker first. Debra Henninger presented a program on “Hobo Quilts.” She explained what the symbols meant that were used by Hobo’s who “rode the rails.” She also showed many quilts using this theme.

We had one visitor. Committee Reports:

Darla Landis needs many volunteers to help sell raffle tickets at the Hershey Quilt Show. Please help! We also need many volunteers for our own Quilt Show next May!

There are still seats available for the bus trip to Oakes, PA for the quilt show. See Faye Spangler, if interested in going.

Aug. 5, 2017 will be the Patty Prodonovich workshop at the Church of the Open Door.

Aug. 17 will be the Guild Picnic. Please bring a dish to share. The Guild will provide plates, napkins, cups, and flatware. In addition to our picnic, Susan Kappes will demonstrate “How to Block a Quilt.”

Mary Moul will no longer be able to offer a raffle item, but she will have a “Bazaar Table” to raise money for Ways and Means. Please donate to this endeavor.

Show and Tell followed our Committee Reports. The meeting was adjourned at 8:25 p.m.

Respectfully submitted, Linda Kenee Recording Sec’y

YQG Trivia

I enjoyed late month’s meeting about the Hobo’s life. It reminded me of a movie.

American Girl produced a depression era move called “Kit Kittredge”. Several of the characters are hobos.

And they show some of that lifestyle with the signs and camp. It is a good movie and is available at the library

Charity Project

Thank you to those of you that have taken the time to contribute to our charity project.  The pillow dolls are so cute and the kids will benefit.
I would like to see many more.  I still have more patterns for those who need them. Peg Gregory

Sad News: Mary Jane Glagola, Red Lion PA Age 69

Mary Jane’s s obit is in York Daily Record. Information in the paper says she was a member of  the “York Quilting Assn”.   I cannot verify that she was part of our group as I don’t remember her.  At one time we had about 150+ menbers and I  don’t know all of them so she could have been a member.  I am assuming that our group is the one referred as York Quiting Assn.  Hazel Wood

If you are a Facebook fan, there are two Quilters’ Guild Facebook pages for you! See Guild news and pictures from our meetings at York Quilters’ Guild.  As the 2018 show approaches, look for information at Celebration of Quilts.

Please feel free to share posts from both sites to your Facebook page, especially for items and programs that are open to the public. If you have anything you’d like shared on the pages, please email me at jrusonis@hotmail.com.
